The Pocahontas County Opera House is delighted to announce its annual Summer Theater Camp, spanning a full week. This exciting initiative is the result of a collaborative effort with the Missoula Children's Theater Touring Program, known for creating entire theatrical shows in just one week. With over four decades of touring history, The Missoula Children's Theater stands out as the largest touring children's theater in America, presenting performances from their Montana base all the way to Japan in over 1,200 communities this season alone, dispatched through as many as 44 Tour Actor/Director duos. When the tour arrives in Marlinton, it really does bring the show - from script to sets, from costumes to props, with the singular exception of the performers themselves – for 'Gulliver’s Travels'.
Auditions will take place on Monday morning to allocate parts among the young actors for a variety of characters including Gulliver, an eccentric scientist, extraterrestrials, the diminutive Lilliputians, mechanical robots, and multiple Yahoos. Throughout the week, the chosen children will engage in rehearsals within a nurturing and enjoyable environment, honing essential developmental attributes such as self-assurance, considerate empathy, articulate communication, strong self-control, collaborative cooperation, inspired creativity, and unwavering dedication. Their efforts will culminate in performances on Friday and Saturday when they take to the stage at Pocahontas County Opera House to showcase their hard work.
Moreover, the Summer Camp will enrich the participating children with knowledge about acting, choreography, and the essential behind-the-scenes magic created by costume, set, and prop design. With a range of activities to spark their imagination, from storytelling and space-themed experiments to engaging craft activities, there's no shortage of learning opportunities.
The camp schedule runs from Monday, July 22, to Friday, July 26, between the hours of 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, concluding with two public performances: one on Friday, July 26, at 5:30 pm and the other on Saturday, July 27, at 2:00 pm. Please note, on the day of the final performance, children should be present at the theatre one hour in advance.
This enriching experience is made possible by our community's generous spirit and assistance, including the invaluable help of local volunteer actors, and both financial and logistical backing from WV Neighborhood Investment Program, PC Parks and Recreation, local schools, and various community organizations. Commemorating the passionate commitment of the late board member Shenda Smith, who played a central role in establishing this camp, we strive to offer scholarships to ensure access for all interested children. Additional donations to perpetuate this artistic opportunity for our youth are warmly welcomed and deeply appreciated.
We eagerly await the opportunity to unlock and nurture the theatrical talents of your child this summer!
Remember, it's important for all campers to be present on each day to ensure a seamless and rewarding experience.
Parents and guardians are kindly reminded that they are responsible for arranging their child's transportation to and from the Pocahontas County Opera House.
