Attack Theatre Presents Curiosity: The Play Book

Where wonder and invention come to life

Under the artistic direction of co-founders, Peter Kope and Michele de la Reza, Attack Theatre creates engaging dance performances in theatrical and non-traditional settings that are passionate portrayals of everyday life. The company creates work at the intersection of art and community, resulting in productions that are personal, authentic, welcoming, and fearless. Attack Theatre’s extensive history of collaborative performances includes work with major symphony orchestras, opera and theater companies, art museums, and on Broadway as choreographers for Squonk. While maintaining a loyal audience in Pittsburgh, the company has toured extensively across the U.S. and around the world, including at the Avignon Festival (France), the 7th Next Wave Dance Festival (Japan), the Indonesian Arts Festival, and Monaco Danses Forum.

Attack Theatre is thrilled to return to the Pocahontas Opera House for an evening in two-acts exploring the limitless possibilities of curiosity, experimentation, wonderment and play.

With bold physicality and cheerful camaraderie, Science Moves offers a “live action book report,” bringing the world of dance and a science classroom to the stage. The first act of the performance combines athletic and expressive movement to embody science concepts through the power of creative play. Science Moves blends story-telling with the principles of science to enhance learning through the spirit of invention. It makes art of science. It makes Science Move!

The second act, Curiosity: The Play Book encourages audiences to let life responsibilities, grocery shopping, middle school assignments, old friend drama, dirty laundry, and bad coffee melt away. Through dance, original music and storytelling, Curiosity seeks to learn by wonder, and move through play.

When asked how he expresses curiosity through his art, Kope says, “Art making is about questioning and navigating uncertainty. It’s a joyful moment to sit with the challenge.” Dancer Lydia Clinton adds, “I am very much an end-goal person, and I don’t necessarily indulge in the process—curiosity challenges me to engage with the unknown.”

It is this insatiable curiosity that is at the center of the company’s creative programs, which include workshops for learners of all ages; performances in schools, community and senior centers; and collaborations with operas, symphonies, theater companies, museums and more. In Marlinton, Attack Theatre will offer open rehearsals, meet and greets with the artists and a special performance for area students.

The evening is choreographed by Attack Theatre Artistic Directors Peter Kope and Michele de la Reza with original music for Curiosity: The Play Book by Dave Eggar. The performance features an all-female cast of dancers: Lydia Clinton, Miranda Nichols, Sarah Zielinski, Isabella Bergamin, and Savionne Chambers.

*if you can’t make it to the performance on Saturday, join us for an open rehearsal on Friday from 4-5 that is free to the public.
